Rec'd a +861 mobile call apparently from scam syndicates - Are our telcos doing something about this?

Nothing - it is not their problem.

I have got many missed call from such code... Luckily I just ignored them.

Not sure if the telco can help u do call barring from that code (China).

I will try to ask M1 Cust. Svc. if they can barr all calls from China from my HP since I've no relatives residing in China.

what is the scam?

any details?

Read it somewhere... you'll receive a call from a number in China - either it will ring and end before you can pick up or it will be cut off as soon as you pick up. They are trying to get you to call back. If you do call back, it's a premium charge number which is charged to your phone bill.. something like that...

So, what are YOU doing abt it?

Activating call barring urself? Or are u juz sitting around making lotsa noise and not using the call barring features on ur phone or calling up ur telco to enquire if there's some kind of number blocking available?

Juz disable international calls loh. Tot some phones/service provider have this feature.:dunno:

why would one called a number that doesnt even register with anyone? i wouldnt bother with numbers that i dont recognize even if it's an emergency.

 then diz forum full of noise.

I remember Singtel did state that any call-charging services company will need to registered with Singtel in order for that company to charge their services to the endusers.
But dun quote me. I wasn't really paying attention to the news that day when this particular issue was air in the CNA news.

I've got quite a number of calls from +861xxx... too but each ring last only a few seconds. I did try calling back but its always a futile attempt. I'll use the 1511 service to call back (1511 service is free for 1st 8 secs into your call). I wont disable calls from China cause some calls might be genuine; such rings may last longer as the caller party is most likely to wait for you to pickup.

unless you're expecting a life or death call from overseas, no need to be kaypoh and call back. if its really important, they can sms you...

How does this 1511 service work? Can they also work for local calls - sometimes I get unidentifiable local numbers calling.

What I cannot stand is people, who identified a problem, and expect others to solve it. It's always someoneelse's responsibility.
