Tamron Vs Sigma in 20s-70s f2.8 macro series

Please enlighten me...

I realised both are about the same price....which would you place your $ with? Why?

1. Tamron SP AF28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Macro Lens
2. Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG MACRO

Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 :thumbsup:

This lense is on my camera most of the time ever since I bought it 2 years ago. No regrets.

At that time, I was choosing between the Tamron, Sigma 24-70mm F/2.8 and the Canon 24-70 F/2.8L. The Canon was way above my budget, so it was dropped quickly. The Sigma has the advantage of a wider view, but slightly shorter telephoto, and it looks and feels and weighs more solid. However the large filter size(82mm!!) puts me off, compared to Tamron(67mm). Also the Tamron is smaller and lighter, easier to lug around.

Of course the final winning point is that I feel that the Tamron is sharper and gives better colour and contrast than the Sigma. Being slightly cheaper is a plus too(At the time when I bought it). Focusing speed is reasonably fast.

It is definitely much better than the kit lense and almost on par with the high end marquee lenses. Built and speed may not be on par with marquee lenses, but the Tamron is able to give you equivalent image quality for those with smaller wallet size.

Thanks kelccm for your reply. Very informative, I am thinking also that the Tamron suits me more, due to the fact that it has slightly (only sligtly) short focus distant and it uses 67mm filter! Same as my D80 kit lens!! Then I can share filter!:bsmilie:

each make of lens has its own supporters and detractors, why dont you go to the shop and try it out for yourself? might want to consider some of the following pointers..

1. cost?
2. built quality?
3. weight? a couple of grams seems nothing at all but as your equipment 'grows' you get what i mean
4. image quality?
5. noise maybe?
6. resale value? (if you intend to upgrade in the not so close future?)

focusing speed wise, i believe both are almost equal, with the sigma maybe a tad faster than the tamron but again, speed difference is negligble (in the ms..)

I have the Tamron 28-75 for about a year. No problems with it.
Pretty compatible with my 350D.

i use 28-75 even though i've got a crop body and i love it. amazing lens.
