I have both, the 58am is great for it's range (Think in terms of shooting outdoors) but somehow I always bring the 43am out with me when I need to flash (that dun sound right !) ...maybe due to the smaller size and lighter weight or maybe due to the finer manual controls available ...nahh ! ...it just looks better and much more balanced on a smaller camera like the A55.
Shoot everything ! ...if it moves, shoot it ! if it doesn't moves, shoot it as well !

I'm no genius (gnus ?) but any idiot can tell you that if you press the "test" button on the flash and there's no flash ...means not working !

If you're concern about size go for 43am if you like to use manual control get 58am it has fast recycle time also.

To yesterday flash must bring cam try it out see I'd flash could ttl or adi. If testing for 58am you should see the focal length changes when u zoom in and out your lens also it should fire. Test on certain object with different distance the flash power should compensate to the distance and your focal length.

If you have friends going HK ask then to buy you there 58AM price in HK very good :-)

what is ADI?? the flash screen will indicate the focal length change??
Can you enlighten me with "est on certain object with different distance the flash power should compensate to the distance and your focal length. "

Get from HK bro even without warranty you're be sure it's bnew flash has some wear and tear also specially the capacitor/bulb unless the previous owner is like us who use the flash occationally then it's ok if the previous owner is a pro then likely the flash is heavily used.

For the Flash Metering I think this is the best description I've seen so far A Minolta/Sony Alpha Flash Compendium - Flash Metering Modes =) If you're getting a 2nd hand 58AM once you mount it and use TTL or ADI metering the flash LCD will have the focal lenght info as you zoom in and zoom out you'll see the fcal lenght changes from wide to zoom I think max is 105mm if I am not wrong (sorry lazy to take out my flash manuals lolz) this is one way of knowing if the flash is working but this is not 100% assurance if not working maybe your hotshoe contacts not clean or has a good contact it happens to my A33 before I thought the flash is faulty but I find out its contact problem. @nd when you test make sure you mounted it to your cam and do some test shots.

when using flash (TTL or ADI) the flash power GN or intensity of light should be in accordance to your subject distance from your camera to ge a proper exposure.

Buying flash is not abt itz GN being larger. The F43AM flash is great for event, as it has power adjustment down to 1/128. This means that even if your subject is at your MFD, u still won't over expose him on TTL!

If you are a long distance snipper, F58AM is the way to go if TTL is required. If not, get a studio strobe.

43AM power could go down as much as 1/128? I thought the power ratio is (Manual Mode) 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 ,1/16 and the weakest 1/32. 58AM based on the manual shutter speed range is from 1/250-1/12,000 I dont know if that's true but that what it say in the 58AM user guide

One more cool feature of 58AM when I was reading the user guide the one called Multiple Flash, user guide said the flash is triggered multiple times while the shutter is open example you set it to 10 times I'll fire 10 times in a single shutter or single shot =) cool with this is you'll be able to capture motion similar to burst mode but this time all those motion will be in single shot =) I haven't tried it yet will try it see if works =)

Just a note, 43AM can do what 58AM has. The main difference if you would like to know is:
    Guide number ( flash power)
Port for ext battery charger is not present in 43AM,
Port for wired off camera flash is also not present in 43AM (only for A65/77/700/850/900 models),
    Weathersealing in F43AM , not in F58AM
    Weight,
Power adjustment - down to 1/128 for F43AM, only down to 1/32 for F58AM.

The flash port is on F58Am, I suppose a65 can use F58am as controller too.
