    Noob question here,

Is it possible to "correct" the lens through calibration if soft at wide open? (no front/back focusing issue)

I assumed you've done the standard checks already? To me, my lens was soft when it was front focusing. If you take a patterned wall at 45 degrees, is the sharpest part still soft?

If the question remains, just bring it back especially if you have warranty, since it doesn't cost a thing (except time )

An example in a photo I took at f1.4... this may not be a good example, but if I put a 5c coin somewhere in the middle of that pix, and then focus on it, the "line" of focus should run through the 5c.

If it consistently focuses nearer or further away from the 5c, then the 5c is OOF and may appear soft. If the line of focus runs through the 5c and you think the 5c is soft then maybe need to bring back.

One thing to note is that the technician I talked to, took a picture directly straight on, which is difficult to judge whether is sharp or soft (it looked sharp enough, but I know it wasn't). I find this method just too difficult to tell that a picture is sharp; go angled, it's much easier to see that a slightly nearer or further point that what you aimed at, is truly in focus.

    Thank you!

Ya did some test with 45 degree wallpaper.Soft not due to fornt/back focusing. I thought my lens was "sharp" enough until comparing it with photos taken by other ppl.
So u mean the softness(not from front/back focusing issue) can be correct through calibration at Sigma service centre?

I can't answer you because I am neither a Sigma representative, nor have I seen your pictures or what you are comparing to, or who you have been talking to or know what situation your photos were taken with or what your expectations may be. It could be cause by a thousand and one things; it might not even be lens if there is an issue with a particular camera.

All I am giving you is general information to help you determine what your next step of action. If in doubt, then go down to Sigma office and get clarification, because trying to pin me to certain statements will not help you.

For myself, I did another shoot (third one) with this lens and everything just came out so right after two (and a half) calibration. I am doing walkabouts with this lens because I can take sharp pictures (in my own opinion) with it. So I am just sharing my own experience in hope that you can find a solution to your problem. Maybe it's a total lemon you got that cannot simply be fixed by mere calibration. I don't know, and pls don't expect me to be able to answer you that.

No prob I hope you get it sorted out also. I am pretty much shooting it at f1.4 most of the time now with this lens after I got my issues sorted out. It's a fantastic lens (although I'm still a bit miffed I had to go down 2.5 times to get it sorted by the service centre).

    <strange>

goes to show the internet forum is a strange beast indeed. sometimes, the exchange of info provides great variety of sharing in experiences and we all benefit for it.

sometimes, in this case of the Sigma 50mm f1.4, it couldn't get more wrong...

i love this new lens and i dun understand the bad comments are coming from.

this is from the virgin use of the lens from the weekend @ f1.4, and it *is* freakin' sharp.

I am using D3, so far so good. Love the bokeh & the foucus speed. Faster than the Nikon AFD & AFS 50mm F1.4 G.

I am loooking for the upcoming 85mm F1.4 HSM.

I've the 30mm F1.4 on my Olympus E520 and I can tell you that at F1.4 it is sharp enough. At F3.5 and above, it is incredibly sharp, comparable to the Olympus High Grade lens that costs a lot more. Not only is it sharp, the colors are wonderful, the contrast is fantastic. A very, very good lens. I just love this lens. It is better than my Zuiko 14-54mm lens, and that's saying a lot.

I just got one yesterday, and I must say this is super sharp, especially when stopped down a little bit. Mine focuses consistently but front-focuses but just a tiny little bit and is nearly impossible to detect unless shot at minimum focusing distance at F1.4. Anyway the front focusing problem is so minor it doesn't really affect my shooting. Will drop by the service center when I'm free to calibrate but I don't feel the immediate need for it

Yeah.. this lens is very sharp even wide open... it's quite heavy compared to the 30 1.4

    *Love this lens.

Any of you have problems focusing when you use to take picture of an object from far distance? Let's say around 4 meters.

My lens always gives OOF shots at far distance :s I would say it's 8 out of 10 is OOF.

But from closer distance, it works perfectly. Sharp and in focus.

It is time for you to visit Sigma Service Centre at Bukit Merah.
My one is having similar issue but until now I have no time to calibrate the lens.
