I think the warranty is 3 years.1 + 2 years extended through Tithes marketing.
What do you mean by glass coating wearing off?
A pic i took some time back to test the bokeh & sharpness..

Why will coating wear off? Not unless you are scrubbing it...

Upgrade to full frame in future ? = 17-40 f4
Silent/faster and better build ? = 17-40 f4
Often shooting in low light? = 17-50 f2.8
Need a longer zoom range? = 17-50 f2.8
Value conscious ? = 17-50 f2.8

If you will using the lens for occasional potraits..the f/2.8 might come in handy..

Re: Tamrom 17-50 f2.8
Used both before.
The L handles nicer, feels more solid, is great to take around, doesn't extend during focusing or zooming, and focuses quietly and quickly.
The Tamron is value for money, performs quite decently, allows one more stop of light than the L, feels a little too plasticy for my liking, handling isn't as good as the L (but that's just me), focuses really near, and quite fast also.

Re: Tamrom 17-50 f2.8
HI the F2.8 really comes in handy for low light shots, esp in enclosed environment like a room even in day time.

lsl03 have basically listed out the important factor...
as for performance, tamron is up to the L, some even said its sharper. contrast wise, normally the L would have an slight edge tho.

Yes. Check out the stats on the Tamron page if you will. MFD (minimum focusing distance) is 0.27m.
