Tokina 16-28mm f2.8 FX good?
Hi all,
Wonder if anyone has experience shooting with this UWA lens. Contemplating if I should get this instead of the more expensive 16-35mm f4 from Nikon. The shorter range is not of a concern. My concern is the IQ of this lens.
Any comments on this is appreciated.
Thank you!

I tested this lens on D700. IQ of this lens is actually very good. The only problem is, the inability to use any sort of filter system on this lens.
The 16-35/4 is a very different lens. because it has VR...

My decision to get 16-35mm was the VR, as if I going to use this for video.. VR will help a lot.

Thanks for comments so far. Yes. Aware that this lens can't take standard filter and without VR. So far, I have not venture into using filter, do doesn't really know the impact of this short coming. Without VR is actually quite ok as don't intend to use it for video as using D700 now.
Indeed. Not many reviews to be found. Based on the limited reviews I read, it seems to be a good lens. But still would appreciate more feed back and as mentioned by Metalhead, more photos taken by this lens.

If you google, you will see mixed review of it. This is a make or break lens in which Tokina always do.
Firstly, have you ever used the equivalent focal length of lens before and at f2.8? Do you plan to use it for video?
Generally F2.8 is good enough but during the day when we are unable to place a filter, it may affect your shots in bright daylight; high chance of flare/CA; I might be wrong on this as I had not used this lens and set the aperature smaller; f11 probably and nothing lower.

But even the Nikon 14-24mm would not accept the filters...

No it's not. It's a matter of if you are willing to spend another 1k to get this len's dedicated filter set from LEE. There are also other solutions these days.

No, I cannot spend 1k on filters. So would you recommend this lens? Anything really bad about it?

Yeah. I am okay without filters. This lens good to buy? Anyone has big downsides to this lens? Generally, reviews are positive and it is way way cheaper than the Nikon 14-24mm

I was offered to buy a one month old piece for $900. Did not pull the trigger. Still kicking myself today when I think of it.

Saw a coupe of shots on Flickr, the lens flare quite abit and the "rainbow" flare around the street lamps is kind of distracting. Hope that help you.
