Default Beginner First use of DSLR

I hope to see that my picture flooded with comments so I could improve my skills most of my friends just said that it is just an average photo that anyone could have got that. I do not want to take average quality photos I want to improve and become better.

    1. In what area is critique to be sought?
The composition, lightings, shadows, photo process and how to improve on the photo.

    2. What one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?
This photo could be recognise as a nice profile pic.

    3. Under what circumstance is the picture taken?
I was invited as a event photographer by the school and it was mine first time using DSLR. While playing games under the hot sun in the afternoon I noitce her seeking shelter under the coconut trees.

    4. What the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture
Personally, I think the photo would be better if the person is bigger.

The composition is sub-par and the focal point is nowhere to be found. I think you should try to make your friend (the subject) to stand out more. Show more movements maybe?

What is your subject or point of interest?

From your portrait framing, it seems the tallest straight up tree and the lady standing below it are the main subjects. Problems are:

    1. you chopped of the top of the tree.
    2. The girl has her hand covering her face.
    3. There is someone sticking an arm out of the tall tree.
    4. there are a lot of people behind your main subject, causing distraction.

You need to read up on composition. you can start here:

Your friend is right, it looks like just an average photo...

However, do not be discouraged by the comments.
Keep shooting, absorb the feedbacks by the fellow clubsnap buddies here.
Eventually you will find your photos better than previous.

DSLR, compact or iPhone, it doesn't matter in this case - you need to learn composition.
