i haven never taken a cruise before but i doubt the movement will be too fast to be detected (cruise ships dun move that fast?).

Yes, if you want to shoot sunrise and sunset.

It will be ok for short exposures where you are trying to retain the framing (for say, HDR) when the ship is anchored.. But out in open sea, you can forget about it.

Depends on what you are shooting, if you shoot UWA, should be no problem though I suspect 30 seconds might have some blurring.

If TS is talking about shooting sunrise from the horizon, then a variance of focal length would be used... This one's 50mm: 80401207 photo - Edutilos photos at pbase.com

    While this one's 18mm: 80401208 photo - Edutilos photos at pbase.com

I remember trying to use a tripod and getting blurry images for the wider focal length... I suspect even if you use 18mm to shoot far away, there will be significant movement... Just like how you have to use fast shutter speed for shooting on board the plane, just to a smaller extent. As long as there is movement, it will not be tack-sharp right?

Of course like I said above, if you are shooting the ship, you can try your luck... In any case, the next cruise I take, the only reason why I would bring a tripod on-board is to shoot on shore if there is a scenic destination/stopover.

By the way, you might want to take note of condensation in the mornings.. I remember having to wait for a little while for the condensation to clear my camera.. The ship interior (at least for Star Cruises) is quite cold..
