Default 500D with long telephoto primes.

How do telephoto prime lenses perform with the 500D macro filter/lens? I've heard that the 500D should be used only with lenses up to about 300mm, what's the reason that we can't put it on a canon 400/5.6 for example? Does the image quality degrade significantly? Has anyone had first hand experience with these kinds of combinations? What kind of reproduction ratio can we expect?

    Thanks

I use the 500D on my Nikon 70-200 F2.8 AFS and have heard of a few people using this lens/filter on the Nikon 80-400 f4.5-f5.6 with no problems what so ever. Obviously using the 500D will never be the same or create exactly the same results as using a dedicated micro/macro lens but to me it is a good compromise, especially on my zoom. The 500D will allow your lens to focus down to 500mm or 50cm but you wont get 1:1 reproduction.
