Hey there,

I'm sure you're not the first person to buy a tele-zoom and be disappointed by the softness of the pics.

You really need to stabilise this lens if you're shooting at the 300mm end unless you're shutter speed is about 1/500. This is probably going to mean you use with a tripod unless there is loads of light!

If you've seen the recent test on this lens, you'll see that it's better not to extend fully, as it will get softer after 270mm+.

Keep experimenting - but watch out for that lens shake!

What software are you using to reduce the size of the images ? It's causing some serious jpeg artifacts. I'd recommend saving using a higher jpeg quality setting.

Sigma 70-300 is capable of good pictures. Maybe you shake during picture taking.

This was taken with a Sigma 70-300mm handheld and probably not over 1/500 sec.

Which software are you using ?

You can try using irfanview (www.irfanview.com), it's freeware. You can batch convert all your large jpegs for web viewing - probably a good setting is 25% image size reduction and save as 50% jpeg quality.

1st shot look like saved in 16 colors. You have to learn how to process your shot in Photoshop.

As for shot 2, it looks underexposed to me. Try to take the shot in the better lighting condition like morning or evening time. Use tripod with time mode and avoid dark background.

I do not agree that the Sigma 70-300 APO is such a bad lens, my opinion is that it is good enough for its price.

I have been using this lens for some months now and am satisfied with the results.

Here are a few pics shot with the lens. The compositions may not be too good for some, but point here is the lens results.

300mm, 1/400sec, F/5.6, handheld

300mm, 1/80sec, F/5.6, handheld

120mm, 1/200sec, F/5, handheld

150mm, 15secs, F/16, tripod mounted

70mm, 20secs, F/16 tripod mounted

I found the lens sharp, contrasty and very good value for money. The pics you upload look like some wrong post-processing steps done... Its also very easy to get hand shake into the equation due to the long focal length. Definitely need a high shutter speed or firm support.

Here is a sample pic taken by me with that lens...
