Default Lighting for Portfolio Photoshoot in Hotel Room

    Hi,

My friend wants me to help with a Portfolio Photoshoot in a Hotel Room.
What is the minimun lighting required for such a shoot?
Is the an external flash unit on a DSLR sufficient?

    Or what?

    Your advise please.

    Thanks!

hmm. i'm worried for your friend if u are asking.

and i'll say depends how u are gonna shoot. if i'm gonna shoot with ambient, window light in the late afternoon, i might not need a flash. i could make do with a reflector. perhaps some modification.

what is the mood gonna be like. what are u shooting for.

you can shoot with available light if you know how,
you can shoot with hotshoe flash with ceiling bounce if you know how,
you can shoot with hotshoe flash with walls bounce if you know how,
you can shoot with off camera flash if you know how,

Sorry may be a bit out of topic, but why not consider to book a studio for portfolio shoots? Lighting is available, spacious with proper backdrops for classical portraits etc.

    Shooting for friend's modelling portfolio.
So she will wear a few outfits.

I have shot in a hotel room before but not for a portfolio.

Anything to take note on the lighting?

That's great. I will suggest a flash mounted on a lightstand with a reflective or shoot through umbrella. Otherwise ringflash will be quite nice as well.

Need to take note of white balance if u are delivering photos in JPEG cos of mixed lighting source from ambient lights from lamps which are likely tungsten

    hahaha irrelevant question

TS, the lighting you choose will to a large extent be dependent on:

    - the ambient lighting (brightness, direction, colour, etc)
    - the style/mood of shot you want to achieve

Maybe you would like to search through some portrait shots and shortlist some which you want to use as inspiration for your shots?
    Exploring! :)

The best way to know is to try it 1st.
There are some photoshoots in hotel room, organized by organizers here.

Maybe can join 1 to try?

Knowing how small some hotel rooms are... your setup may bounce light off everywhere, and the shot will still come out looking like a gary fong lightsphere shot.
