Don't buy because people tell you. Buy only when you feel a limitation, then get the lens that lets you go beyond that limitation.

Different lens for different needs, so the top three is going to differ for different folks. My own recommendations:

Just one lens: Nikkor 18-105 or 18-200
    General photography: Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
    Wide angle: Tokina 11-16 f/2.8
    Low light / bokeh: Nikkor 50 f/1.8
    Macro: Tamron 90

I've used most of these lens myself, except Nikkor 50 f/1.4 and Sigma 150mm macro instead of the above-mentioned.

    Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 or 17-55mm f2.8
    Sigma 10-20mm
    35mm prime

    That's all I need.

I assume you have a DX body, given your current lens.

    I recommend:
    - Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 for UWA
    - Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D/G for portraits and low light mid-tele or Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 VR for portraits, and macro
    - Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR1/2 for your tele range, since you didn't mention any budget.

    - nikon 105mm f2.8 VR for portrait is very slow in AF ... if die die need 105mm, then i recommend 105DC or 135DC

    The 3 I can't live without are:

24mm f/2.8 AIS (I use this the most)
    50mm f/1.8 AFD (When I need AF)
105mm f/2.5 AIS (Absolutely beautiful images)

But TS has that range covered so just start taking photos and check your exif when you pick out the good ones and you will figure out your favourite focal lengths and you can go from there. IMO you don't need a lens if you're asking other people what lens to get.

    Tokina 11-16
    Nikon 17-55
    70-200 VR1

this combo would be sweet, add 85 1.4 D or G would be nice for a low light and portrait

Yup considering the 70-300. But there is the cheaper 55-300 but apparently the 70-300 have better performance & it is FX lens so good if upgrade in future

    1) Tamron 17-50 for general purpose.
    2) If you need cheap telephoto, consider the 70-300. It's a FX lens so when mounted on a DX body, it's 105-450. Quality suffers though.
    3) hmm... Maybe a macro here? Don't really know what you need. Or consider things other than lenses like flashes maybe? Or a dry cab? Tripods not that bad either. Or backpack? Perhaps darkroom chemicals to develop your memory card...

    Ignore the last sentence

Are you sure nikon 105mm F2.8 VR is very slow in AF? Then mine should be a very unique set, my 105VR is very fast, same speed as my other nikon F2.8 and F4 lens.

You got a pretty decent setup for newbies. You might want to consider a macro lens or a telephoto lens next. It is fun to have a macro lens.

yes ... its about 2x less fast than my other 2.8 lens. I am talking about indoor with low lightings...

even my tamron 90mm I think it is quite fast also,
so I suppose nikon 105mm VR should be faster?

Either something wrong with your 105VR or my 105VR. My 105VR is very fast, the speed is fast even indoor with low light, got no problem with it at all.

Anyway.... maybe it is due to our personal view on the 105VR. If for indoor portrait with low light, it would still be okay, since indoor portrait suppose to be OTOT.
