try to have a "plan" before you head out.

think of what you want to shoot first. for example old people hanging out at chinatown or children at play. for example sunsets or pretty night lights

that will give you a "purpose"...

from there, you can plan the time and location...

once you know where and when to go, think of the possible angles or background you might want to capture

you can look at other people's website/works for some ideas

Any place you feel that you can get interesting shoot. This make photography an interesting hobby.

I shoot this because the lighting provides some interesting shadows on the wall and the basin.

Here is a theme for you: "blue". Just grab your camera, go out, and shoot anything you think is fitting the theme. After that, for next shoot you can think of your own theme. E.g. "blue and rounded", "smile" (doesn't need to be human!), "rough", etc. Have fun.

Sometimes, not knowing what to shoot is half the fun...e.g. try to venture out into the reservoir parks and shoot what you find interesting... from landscape to macro to action etc. try EVERYTHING!
