Default Recommend Wide angle zoom

hi all, currently using a 24mm lens on my f80. its a great lens with excellent build, and picture quality (flares easily though) but after my latest trip where i was juggling multiple lenses during changes, i am toying with the idea of getting a wide angle zoom that can give me some more flexibility in composition etc.

my current choices are the nikon 24-85g and the 28-105d... both of which have excellent reviews from most people, cost about the same used ($350~$400) and both of which have their plus points i.e. 24-85g has afs and a wider wide end, and 28-105 has a 1:2 macro mode (i dont have a macro lens). any comments are welcome!!

The 28-105 is a great sharp lens that can be used for macro work. Take a look at my macro gallery - all of the shots were taken with this lens. As were all the model photos too. A very versatile lens that gives great sharp images. I leave it to ESPN to add the obvious conclusion

Try getting the Tokina 19-35mm.... It's a beauty..and best of all affordable. I may be selling it to finance a new 12-24 fromNikon/Sigma/Tokina...

haha... i have a low budget. will be willing to spend up to 450 for this lens. i think the maximum i have ever spent on a lens is 350 bucks!

hi nemesis, thanks for your reply. i know third party lenses are cheaper but i really like the feel and build of a nikkor lens..

hi espn, i cant afford lenses like the 17-35 lah! was thinking about the 18-35 (i.e. poor cousin to the 17-35) for the longest time, but couldnt bring myself to pay 800+ for it.

28-105 is a good lens. But thought the price is higher than 450?

18-35's pretty decent being 1/3 the price of the 17-35. You won't regret having it.

But just a kind comment, if down the road you know you will upgrade further, seriously, save up and go for the best and avoid buy/sell, during the 'trade' you lose $.

Yes, for the price, can't really complain about the 28-105D. Sharpness and contrast are ok. Except that in low light conditions, it hunts a fair bit with the F80. Also, it's not easy to MF with this lens.

I still have this lens and at one time, it was my only AF lens.

Second-hand prices are about $400 +/-, depending on condition.

try Tamron 24-135! Equally sharp, wider, longer, and have macro mode!

Buying a 24-85G lens is not going to solve your wide angle needs... If you are spending such amt, i rather you get the Tokina and SIgma 28-80. Much better built and quality as well as fixed f2.8 aperture.....One of the best is the Tokina 28-70 Pro II or Pro I....look for 2nd hand and you will see the different.

Being brand consious is one thing, buying something thats not good enuff becos it has the name or logo is worse...

I am that sort who will save up to get the best the market can offer, so you don't need to worry about upgrading in the future

And it will also clear whatever doubts you will have regarding your equipment, so you have no reason to blame your lense if the picture is not nice and also knowing that you have the best the market can offer, you can shoot with more confident

Was at the HSBC Wakeboard World Cup last Sunday. Started taking photos with my VR 70-200 at the far end.

After a while, I realised that all the people around me was using Tamron, and Sigma, Tokina... So was pretty proud of my VR

Then I walked nearer to the grand stand... The nearer I got to the grand stand, so does the quality of the lenses used by the photographers there! And when I was beside the grand stand, my god!! There are no less than 8 (non-professional) photographers each with their VR 70-200!!!!

Hmmm.... talk about equipment giving you the level of confident.
