In simple terms, macro lenses allow you to focus closer than regular lenses so you can shoot really close to an object and get higher magnification.

For food, you can try a macro lens but you can experiment with your kit lens first. Same for landscape, try it out with your kit lens before deciding on other lenses

    1. A Macro lens allows you to focus close to an object with a high level of magnification.
    2. The lens attached to your camera. :P Seriously, practice with your kit lens first, if you keep encountering a block in focusing due to your lens' MFD, you can try a macro lens.
    3. Depends on the scenery. I know most people are happy with the kit lens. Others buy an ultra-wide-angle lens. Others shoot scenery with a 300mm lens...

This is what your macro lens can do. A wonderful close up photo.

Agree with the rest, 18-55/18-105/18-135 kit lenses will be able to produce quality landscape photo. Just play with it.

Not really. The 18-55 does not have the same MFD nor magnification. But it's a decent "all purpose" lens.

To get a macro shot like that of the frog, I'd even recommend a 100-200mm macro lens to keep a distance and not scare off the critters.

Macro lens is close-up photography, usually of very small subjects

Yes... the 18-55mm kit lens can do that, but you would need an extra attachment...

    Attachment can include,

    1) Extension tube
    2) Raynox closeup lens (250, 150), Canon's 500D, 250D (not to mistaken to the EOS 500D)
    3) via an adapter - mount your 18-55mm reverse to your camera, or
    4) via an adapter, mount another lens reverse to your 18-55mm

Sorry to hijack thread but adding a macro filter will help too right?

Closeup lens (closeup filter) like the Raynox 250 and Canon 500D will definitely help to increase the magnification factor of the lens itself.
