    Hazards:
    1. Get mistaken for the much hated Geylang Checker, U DIE!
    2. Illegals such as ciggy seller, drug dealers, illegal U die
    3. Illegal prostitutes , u die
    4. Cheating husbands think you're a PI U die.

    No play play.

There was a caucasian lady, a fine arts lecturer IIRC who set up her easel there & started painting portraits sometime ago. But that is vastly different from a person who starts to shoot with a dslr, the people there will think you're either a PI or someone intruding their privacy which they so closely guard. It's like entering a battelfield with a red umbrella over you.

Get a small, discreet rangefinder style camera & shoot from waist will be pretty cool though.

That said, there are interesting architecture to shoot there & I would do it on a Sunday morning

Get the Sigma 150-500mm w 1.4x converter. Get everything into a travel trolley bag (including the tripod). Check into a nearby hotel with room facing where you want to shoot. Can choreograph a series of shots at your own leisure from dusk to dawn next day. Safe, unharassed and comfortable. Post you pics here in cs...

Make sure the reception is not aware of your intention or you will still be dead. A hush2 operation.

I know people doing proper biz. I never say I know people who "roam the streets".

Incidentally, a friend told me some old streets of geylang are RAPIDLY disappearing because of the overly heated property market in Sin-ga-bore.

Many old brothels have been bought up by developers and old houses will be demolished for the building of Micky Mouse Condos.
The stretch towards the higher Lorongs are already being fenced up, torn down and the faces of Geylang rapidly changing.

I don;t know who has the right mind will buy condos in the middle of a sleezy red light districts, but most likely these Micky Mouse Condos will be sold to PRC or other foreigners.

For documentary purpose, it is worth while to shoot the area. But I don't know how safe it is, as I have seen fighting by the street while driving past that very messy and crowded lorongs.

How to run, if I bring FBO there is close to 10kg. We just find a tripod gang and if needed, it can use for self defense

Tripod in position --> Extended and pointing forward
    Ready --> Locked under arm
    CHARGE!!!!

But what's your intend of shooting there? What's your inspiration? These are mine:
    1. http://mathiasheng.com/asia_sex_trade.html
    2. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...n-negotiations

However, my intend is not fully focused on the sex-trade. But also other lifestyles in Geylang. The common stereotype thinking of the even-numbered Lorong is that it is infested by sex-trade. But it is not the case when I walked it even when I walked the darkest alleys.

It's definitely challenging to approach the subjects for photos. With the recent saga of a blog busting cheating guys at Geylang, the people there may be more sensitive to cameras. But I believe it is still possible to go ahead with the photojournalism; it's the approach...

But if you go there wanting to shoot only the street workers, i think your balls very big.
take note the workers have pimps and pimps have thugs.
so like what the others have said, if you have a death wish, be our guest.
99% of subjects are worth it, this is the 1% exception.
    just my 2 cents worth.
You will be surprise to see some photojournalist can even get to shoot the subjects doing the deed. So it's not impossible.

You hong , nice pictures. I did it many years ago in the 90s with Yashica GTN ASA3200.
That place was not that horrible as it is now. It used to be a great hangout for family to get some decent food.
The old Great World is totally gone now.

Do let me know if you are guys are venturing out there again.

Road march through geylang while taking photos and singing "Purple Light" doesn't sounds that bad.

Why not book a streetwalker and shoot her in the safety of a hotel room?

Can even set up softbox and backdrop.
