ya i actually take in RAW and do PP for the sharpening and clarity of the picture.

just want to know how to take a sharper picture without or with lesser PP.

You can just upload the photos (reduced to max 800 pixels long side) to a hosting site like Flickr or Photobucket, then link them to your post.
Otherwise everyone who wants to view your example photo has to click on the link and download.

I think your second picture looks quite ok, even pixel peeping at the model's eyes. It is not critically sharp, but is doing fine for a kit lens. First picture is a bit soft, not sure what's the reason but might be due to slight AF inaccuracy. Just apply a little USM in Photoshop and you'll be fine, unless you're willing to spend money in a pro or prime lens.

Btw have you tested the kit lens in outdoor daylight condition? I don't think this issue is related to your studio lighting.

erm what's USM? will prime lens help with the sharpness of the picture? I haven't tried to shoot outdoors yet.

    USM is unsharp mask.

At the apertures you normally use in a studio (f/8, etc) buying a prime lens will not really help.

Switch to jpg format if you don't want to do PP. You can't have both side of the world.

I actually set my camera to save in RAW + fine jpg. the jpg format it saved doesn't really look sharp either

That's strange. it's either your poor focusing or something goes wrong with your gears.

any pros have tips on focusing?

what i usually use is AF-A on nikon, and sometimes i want the sharpness in the eyes. I will on the auto focus for the lens to focus then I will change to manual on my DSLR and place the focus point on the model eyes.

    is there a better method?

Huh? Why so convoluted? Why not just shoot is AF-S, and choose a focus point close to the eye to minimise the 'recompose-focusing-error'?
