    Default Sigma 30mm F1.4 or Canon 50mm f1.4 USM ?

Hey ppl, i'm going to buy my 1st prime lens and was considering of getting Sigma 30mm f1.4 or Canon 50mm f1.4 USM

which do you guys think is better? I am hoping that this prime lens will also become my main lens as i'm just a casual photographer taking mainly photos on people, food and a lil of landscape.

    Thanks!!

U using crop body or FF? It actually depends though, if u like to shoot wide or just nice 50. if on crop, i'd prefer 30mm, cause i prefer going wide. But just my 2 cents! 30/50 a bit hard to get wide landscape tho, tight ones maybe haha

hi technoglitz87, im using canon 500d. so its a crop body right? in term of autofocusing, does sigma have any issue? I have read reviews elsewhere and they mentioned that it has AF prob. hmm..

Yes it's a crop body, with factor of 1.6x for canon. Most seem to say to encounter back/front focus, so please do testing prior to purchase. But i still think it all depends on luck..haha. Some nv kena, some no matter try how many times oso have. But it has to do with compatibility with bodies too.. some ok with another body, not ok with this. Or u can send to sigma for calibration, i tink is $150... correct me if i'm wrong Cheers

You need to test the lens properly before paying. That way, you will not run into any hassles.

This are some pics from my Siggy 50/1.4. No calibration needed.

BTW, which focal length is better, really depends on what you intend to shoot and how you intend to shoot. for your camera, the 30mm will be a better general fast prime, while the 50mm will be a better portrait lens.

Calibration is free for 2 times during the warranty period, if the lens is a local Singapore copy bought in Singapore from an authorized dealer.

On crop bodies, the 30mm makes a good walk around lens. The 50mm is great for portraits but a little tight indoors. Test the lens on the spot with a focus chart for peace of mind

The 30mm is designed for the crop sensor cam, you can't use it on Canon ff cam.

I intend to use the lens as a walk around lens. So most probably I will get 30mm. Thanks for the advice.

Yap. I don't have the intention to upgrade the body to a FF yet. I'm just wanna get a lens that can really perform in low light and also give a fantastic bokeh. It's frustrating to use the kit lens when I'm in a dim environment. Thanks for the reminder anyway!!

I bought my 50mm f1.8 for abt a year, used it less than 10 times because it's too tight for me. Ended up getting a Sigma 30 f1.4. Test the lens until you're satisfied with it

I'm a Nikon user. But I admit I considered wider lenses, especially Sigma 24mm f1.8. But after adjusting my kit lens to 24mm, 28mm and 30mm, I find tt I'm more comfortable with 30mm. And to add on, it has a wider aperture. Not really much of a difference, but it will still come in handy someday
