Its the moulted skin. Insects have the exoskeleton that cannot expand. so when they grow they have to shed the outer layer of the exoskeleton.

so far, i've only seen moults of snakeskin (partial), and empty, moulted crabshells on beaches. this is interesting. there should be a corresponding hole where the growing insect emerged from...
ahh yes, now i remember what i wanted to add. the soft-shell crabs some of you guys makan, are non-existent - they are just crabs that just broke out from its older exoskeleton ![]() Last edited by sehsuan; 15th October 2004 at 12:38 PM. |
