Thread: MTF & Vignetting mean everything to a lens?

Default MTF & Vignetting mean everything to a lens?

Photozone.de tested lens based on MTF and Vignetting. I was looking at Canon EF-S 55-250 f4.5-5.6. Surprisingly it scored very well in both aspect.

However, the-digital-picture.com rated it quite lowly. Just wondering why is it so, even after it scored high points in MTF in photozone.

It's MTF50 measured by photozone averages around 2200+ and is not really that good, e.g. comparing with the 70-200L/4 IS USM which averages around 3000 (which the-digital-picture.com used as one of the comparison). Of course the comparison is not fair as one is APS-C prosumer and the other a full frame pro lens. If you compare this lens to other prosumer lenses then it is probably considered very good. And yes MTF is not everything, there are also the contrast and color rendition, bokeh, CA characteristics, etc. Added to that is the sample variations. And a lens that looks good in a lab test might not necessary perform well in actual shooting.

You didn't read the entire review did you? It only scored 3/5 on optical and mechanical quality. There's a lot more than just MTF and Vignetting. They even state "The most obvious flaw is, unsurprisingly, vignetting at large apertures. ".

So please, look beyond graphs and actually try to read and comprehend.
