A walkabout lens is a lens that has the focal length(s) that you use most often in it so you do not need to change lens all the time. Walkabout lens is a lens where you walkabout with!
The equipment can only bring you so far - the rest of the photographic journey is done by you.

A lens you can go for a walkabout with.... what that means can be subjective to anyone.

Basically, a walkabout lens contains the focal length you will normally use. SO that you only need to bring that one lens.

For example, you like wide angles but you also like a little bit of tele and you have a 1.6x crop dslr... then a walkabout lens could be a 18-125mm or 18-200mm.

OTOH, if you are using film or full frame... this could be a 28-105mm or a 28-135mm

Erm, the lens must be light enough to be used for walking around for long periods! Don't think anyone would like to take a 50-500mm as a walkabout (although it may be nice)?
