Hmmm... there is a CSer from Melbourne. Forgot his nick though. Maybe he can help. (Then again, he mentioned he's coming to Singapore to buy things!)
The shops in the city, camera equipment costs way too much. Even more than Singapore in absolute price before converting currency. ![]() Yah, Michael's is on the corner of Elizabeth and Lonsdale. |

Prices in Melbourne are usually more expensive than in Singapore - especially the camera stores in the city (Michael's, Ted's etc) One place you can get your friend to check out is Vanbar in Carlton - they sell a very good selection of photographic equipment, and sometimes their prices can be cheaper than here for certain items.

Its true what everybody said about prices there. Even the second hand stuff more expensive than Singapore. A word about Vanbar. It seems for cameras they only specialise in Nikons. They carry a large range of black & white papers and chemicals some of which unobtainable here. Also inkjet papers

Vanbar also not cheap... they develop film and print photos too. Unsurpassed, man. They take their time but it's worth the wait.
That's right, 1000words a.k.a. David. weevil84, pm him. As AhV and I have mentioned, he's coming here to get camera stuff. Dunno where you got the impression that camera equipment is cheaper in Oz. Even Crumpler bags are more expensive there... |

If your friend can buy the cameras duty free from the larger city shops, some cameras can be cheaper than Singapore. I believe GST is 20%. Remind your friend to bring the air ticket.

GST is 10% in Oz. After GST still marginal. Remember it's Oz$ not S$.

My mistake, Ozzie GST is 10%.
However, under the Canon discussion 20D in store and price out !! 20D body is S$2850 in Singapore. One online store in Australia quotes A$2419. If bought duty free it works out to be S$2650. That's about S$200 savings for the 20D if you can get it for the same price in Melbourne! The store mentioned in the thread claims international warranty too. Ted's cameras on Elizabeth Street in Melbourne lists the D20 kit at A$2700. Duty free price would work out to be S$2950. That is still marginally cheaper than the Singapore price of S$2990. Not sure about their warranty status though. Therefore, some cameras can be cheaper when bought duty free from Australia. Whether it is worth the trouble is another matter. |

The few reputable camera shops within the Melbourne CBD would be Camera House, Ted's, Photobee and Michael's. All located along Elizebeth Street. Another one would be Camera Exchange located on Lonsdale Street. They usually stock the higher end stuff as well as the larger formats. All in all, I don't see the point in buying something in Melbourne especially if you can get it easilt in Singapore.

Still, the 20D price is one of the exceptions, not the rule. In general, electronic goods in Oz are more ex, not just cameras.
