Bro, I strongly recommend you to take a look at Pentax K-R. For the functionality packaged in that body at that kind of pricing, it's hard to beat.

A 2nd hand Kx with 18-55mm kit lens is probably around $400-$600 (never followed the price too closely myself).
It is better featured as far as picture taking is concerned.
In built shake reduction, one of the best high ISO performance cameras at its release, in-built AF motor.
Its backward compatibility will mean that a lot of cheap and good old legacy lenses are avaliable at good prices.

At $800+, go look at a Kr as well. Again very nicely featured for the money.

Or a Sony A500/A550. If you're a live view shooter you at least get full-speed AF.

Totally agreed with skystrike, i personally have hand on the pentax k-r is really a camera worth looking at... The iso capability is also really good too. The only one thing i really don't like is the shutter that all.. overall a really nice and capable camera..

I am so lucky that I was able to find this forum because I am also planning on buying a dslr and I'm targeting D3100 since it's the one my uncle is using. but maybe after reading your posts about other good cams i might change my mind.
