Community Mediation Center (CMC) actually got the Singaporean Indian family not to cook curry when the PRC family is at home. So much for attempting to integrate Foreign Treasures into our society.

I guess with almost 1/2 of the population here being foreigners, I wouldn't be surprise if there are restrictions on what we can cook or eat (Durian etc. etc.) inside our own home in the near future.

A family, who had just moved here from China, had resorted to mediation because they could not stand the smell of curry that their Singaporean Indian neighbours would often cook. The Indian family, who were mindful of their neighbour's aversion, had already taken to closing their doors and windows whenever they cooked the dish, but this was not enough.

"They said: 'Can you please do something? Can you don't cook curry? Can you don't eat curry?'," said Madam Marcellina Giam, a Community Mediation Centre mediator. But the Indian family stood firm. In the end, Mdm Giam got the Indian family to agree to cook curry only when the Chinese family was not home. In return, they wanted their Chinese neighbours to at least give their dish a try.

To be honest, Singaporeans are putting up with a lot of noise and nuisance.

I used to live overseas for a long time that the room was always so quiet, I need to have the TV, radio turned on, or someone to nag at me.
Otherwise I could hear my ear drums buzz. Mind you, its not a remote area or secluded place. Its a service flat near greater Boston area.

Now back to reality, here, Singapore, some HDB flats are so noisy its unbelievable. It boils down to too many Buay Zi Dong people (no social conciousness).
The noise from the roads (damn motorbikes), the banging and stamping from neighbors, and sometimes there are strange noises like marbles or even chains dragging!

Singapore government like to have laws that cannot be implemented. Such as no noise after 10pm, but right up to 11pm there are still people making noise.
Police these days don't even care about anything, maybe one day they will declare they are NOT the police.
No smoking at lift lobby/corridoors but who cares, no wonder there are so many lung cancer terminal cases (you don't want to see them, face really gruesome).

As Singapore's population is approaching Six Million, prior to that I believe there will be a breakdown point. Social unrest and intolerance will escalate so much
and, the place become unlivable like Hong Kong. I hope that will not be the case.

However, the common things I hear about from colleagues, myself inclusive, are excessive noise and smoking in HDB.
Don't think condos are spared. It can be the same or worse.
MF Film user. Nikon D800 works too.

Today I am on leave and decide to go and take a good look at my new neighbor. To my surprise, there are around 10 kids shoes at the doorstep so I asked the kids if they are staying here. The kids are all around 4-6 years old. A woman came to the door and asked me who am I. I told her I stay downstairs and came to take a look because it is too noisy. She said they are all her children and nieces. She also said as long as it is before 10pm I cannot do anything to her and ask me to complain to the minister by all means. F**kin B**ch. I suspect she is running a illegal child care day centre at her own HDB flat. What can I do to stop all the noises and check whether is she running a illegal business upstairs? Thanks.
i think im one of the children..

anyway u can report it. but the most that they can do would be to advise them not to make noise.

then get the government to ban motor vehicles on the roads. then make every singaporean ride bicycles to work just like the Chinese. or walk! healthy living

hmm i think we need you to patrol every neighborhood in singapore at night to ensure that everyone keeps their mouths shut and not utter a single word. you know... because people have a tendency to answer when you talk to them. make sure you use sign language! or else they'll reply you and then it'll get noisy!

Ban cigarettes! did you know the bulk of our country's wealth comes from cigarette tax? and i don't see people in other countries complaining about the factories' carbon emissions

In all the marvel comics books ...

It's always unrest time like these that a hero will surface and appear in the neighbourhood to uphold peace and justice.

Almost 1 yr later, I dig out this thread.

This morning, 6+, the noise on top of my unit, enough to wake me up. I went up, told the kids off. Then noise stop, I went back to sleep.

8+, same noise, location again. I went up, the parents are up too. We have a heated arguement. They says I accused them for making noise. So obvious the noise directly from their unit and also, they claim that they sleep on floor. That's why the kid can play with the item and when I went up, he stopped. They even challenge me to write to town council. I did bring a small rod when I went up on the 3rd time to create noise as during the 2nd time, the bigger kids want to fight with me. His neighbour come out and says they are good people, says that if one day they quarrel as mosquito breed outside at their unit.

After I come back, the noise stopped. But I heard it at living room. I dont think it's from another floor up as the noise so loud that I can wake up. The noise is not first time, been there since I move in. Really dont know what to say about this kind of neighbour.
    Only Sony device mostly, haha!

    i think it's fine.

compared to my room where my "neighbors" love to

    - drop marbles and coins at weird hours of the night
    - shift furniture around
    - (from the unit below) using a stick to tap the ceiling
    - hide in my cupboard and cough
    - stand behind me and sneeze
    - have weird old chinese music at 1AM in the morning playing from outside the window

The noises you heard might not be from the neighbour upstairs BUT from inside your own house..

Every house has its spirits that co-mingle with the owners. Marble dropping..chairs dragging are some of the sounds..no kids play marble nowadays..

Do some prayers..or call someone who knows about spirits to clean the house..sometimes we come home late at nite..unaware that "someone" follows..lolZ..but if its only noise, i guess its still ok & friendly..

Dont trust my words 100% though coz i love to listen to Malay radio channel 89.7fm every weekday from midnite till 2am..its all about mysteries & spirits..

Noise travels in strange ways through the structure of a modern building.
Sometimes the origin of the noise is not what you think.
If the neighbour is really not the culprit, then they will feel injustice if you keep blaming them.

About a year ago, I heard very loud banging noise for a long period of time, which seemed to come from somewhere upstairs.
But since I have some knowledge of such acoustic transmission, I wisely decided not to trouble my upstairs neighbour.
Later I checked and discovered that the noise was from extensive renovation of a unit one or two storeys below and some distance away.
That is, the noise was transmitted diagonally upwards.
They had a proper permit to do so.
Just left it at that and let it be until the renovation was completed.
