I think your friend will also need someone who are good at doing touch up on the jewellery after the shoot, i.e a good DI artist.

If he can design a brochure, it only make sense that he is a good DI artist as well.

Not true... some designers are good in layouts (ie. Illustrator, Pagemaker, Freehand, InDesign) but are not very good with image manipulation (ie. Photoshop)

Ok lah, to be fair, someone who just do layout like my friends in books publishing (text books etc), they are referred to as layout artists.

Designer on the other hand has to know more, they create, design, manipulate anything and everything like photos, logos etc. Some are good, some are better, some bogus. I am just guessing this guy who dare to take on the project should know what to expect since jewellery pics are everywhere.

FYI, shoting jewellery is a traditional field for large format, 4X5 viewcam is normally considered the mininum.
even with digital, MF digital back is really needed for the resolution, dynamic range and ability to take 2X2 movement shot to eliminate the color mosaic (or else the tiny bright points will all be colored)
