Best is to use the many many many guides and examples found on Adobe.com and all the photoshop-related websites and youtube videos, like http://photoshop101.com/ for example. For books, there are books focusing on photography, on digital art, etc. Do some browsing. Show initiative.

    Thanks for the input!

Rashkae: I was browsing in the bookshops and there were so many of them.
Didn't want to just grab any and waste precious dollars thus am asking for opinions here. =)

most photoshop books is best for giving you an overview,
beside, the photoshop is updating every year or two, books soon will be outdated too.

the photoshop has so many features,
I will not need some them now, learning using them is very hard for me to understand,
beside the book usually will not cover the features in very detail
but if I when need know how to use them,
all I need is to do online searching.

for an example, when I need to learn how to use smart object,
it is very easy to understand from the tutorials found in youtube rather from the books.

I fully agree. It's much faster to look at the online resources and have good bookmarks (with video too) than flip through a book imho.

agree agree.... get a decent book to get an overview. This will allow you to know what keywords to search later. Then online sources like youtube for details on using a particular function or key.

There're many photoshop books all talking about almost similar topics so the differentiating factor would be finding one that's most suitable in terms of presentation to aid understanding.

Not quite the beginner book but for photographers,
The Photoshop Darkroom by Harold Davis and Phyllis Davis, ISBN: 978-0-240-81259-5
I find it much easier to digest. and yeah, I borrow it from the library. No point buying for this sorta stuff.

More sample content for the book here

If you go to PeachPit, you can see sample contents and reviews for all books under them.

Both PeachPit and AdobePress books are produced by Pearson, and both websites have weekly US$9.99 ebook deals.
Good to look out for deals on books you are interested in.
