Shanghai is one of the best travel hubs.

Interesting cities within close reach of Shanghai:

    Shanghai University town
    Suzhou
    WuXi
    Hangzhou
    JiaXing
    Ningbo

Interesting sights within Shanghai or close:

    Qibao old town
    Song Jiang movie city
    Zhouzhuang watertown
    ZhuJiaJiao watertown
    WuZhen watertown
    XiTang watertown
    Nanxun watertown
Hangzhou West Lake (and the tons of points of interest around it)
    SheShan (snake mountain)
    Huangshan (yellow mountain)
    and many many more....

There are many many other locations for photoshoots in the countryside. But you will need a car more than anything.

If u buy train tix to another city, avoid Fri evening, sat & Sun when ppl in & around Shanghai move in & out of Shanghai.
So ppl from Near by cities work in Shanghai, then go back to their family over the wk end.
So buy you tix prior to the day u depart.

some area in Shanghai that i think is worthy for Street Photography:
    1) xin tian di
    http://www.xintiandi.com/english/index_e.asp
    2) 田子坊Tianzifang
    http://www.tianzifang.cn/

Of Course in Hangzhou go to West Lake, but if u able to, go to the tea plantation.

for Suzhou, make sure u go to the "Suzhou Museum" building design by I.M. Pei,
the building us the famous suzhou-made "gold tile" the same tile foe the forbidden city.
If u lucky and see the building turn black color when Rain.
The Tile material is dark gray, turn black when wet, but it's very dry off quick
so when rain stop, u see the building gradually turn from black to grey as it dry...

In Shanghai & surrounding Cities, pls be careful of "Black shops", which even hire "Lure"
if u look foreign, some one will chat with u and make friend...then suggest go somewhere for a drink & continue chatting.
the "Lure" would recommend a place......when u see the bill.....XXXXXXX

also there was incident of swindler that ask ppl help them take photo with the city backdrop...
then accuse u of mishandling their camera, spoiling it, when it's spoil in the 1st place.

Some ATM in China get sticker showing their accept Mastercard/Visa...etc...then can't...
pls move around with more cash. or u open a bank account with Bank of China, then u have access to China's version of NETS, more usable there than credit card.

Do ask for receipt when taking taxis & restaurants (not road side store ah)
If they don't give, ask for a 20% discount.
Coz they might not register the transaction via their meter/cash register, hence avoid service tax to government.

    Enjoy ur self

You can try Nanjing. It's only a few hours ride on the high speed train and it is a place rich with culture and history. If you are interested in WWII history definitely a place to go with the Nanjing Massacre Musuem. FOC too. Hangzhou is beautiful with lots of interest ard the west lake. Must watch the impression of west lake. A tripod and a high speed long lenses will be good to capture the beauty of the performance. I went in winter and nearly froze my ass off. Shanghai itself have a lot of photo opportunity with a good mix of ultra new and old buildings. I regretted not spending more time there working on the street photography. XinTianDi is okie only. Went there during Xmas but dun feel much xmas spirit there. Think is loses to Singapore Clark Quak still in terms of pub variety, drinks and atmosphere. Lots of good looking girls there if you can sit outside and enjoy the walkabout crowd during evenings

If you have enough time, you can "discover" Putuo Shan

Putuo Shan is an island southeast of Shanghai.
    (Easter Sea of China)
Putuo Shan can easily reached by bus (day Tour) from Shanghai (appr. 140 rmb only).
The bus terminates at Shenjiamen Bus Station. From the Banshengdong Wharf
on the Shenjiamen Waterfront it is a 10 minute ride by fast ferry (appr. 22 rmb)
    to Putuo Shan.

Don't worry, Shanghai is a great, elegant & famous city with wonderful people.
Just take care like in any other MegaCity on the Planet

    Enjoy your trip

    I'm going to shanghai too.

I'm going to stay at fudan university area.

I only got one day of free time and I'm keen on street photography of old buildings, houses, streets.

Is there any where worth going, just for a day of morning and afternoon??

I know fudan is not near to anywhere.

I have been to xintiandi before.

If you are adventurous enough, you can travel to Huangshan city to pay visit to Mt Huang, Hongcun. Huangshan city is just a 45mins flight from Shanghai. Nice place to visit and both Mt Huang and Hongcun are UNESCO projects.

Thanks all for the advice given. As I will be there during the National Day week (30sept - 4th Oct), it will be damn crazily crowded everywhere (heard from my friends). I hope to go to further places however, due to train transport ticket problem i might be only be allowed to go nearby places. However, my itinerary has included Hangzhou and Suzhou + Shanghai only. Hopefully this trip will be smooth going!
