hi zig,
sorrie, a bit suaku and a newbie at this...does the 550ex really support eTTL-2? From my understanding, eTTL-2 is a new algorithm developed for 1D and 20D? I was always under the impression that the 580ex is the first model from Canon that provides eTTL-2 support. |

Read the manual for both the flashes and do your own comparisons.
The big deal - bigger GN, better design, intelligent chip that adjust flash according to sensor size. Supports ETTL II. Built in diffuser and bounce card ![]()

According to canon's specs, ETTL-II works with the 550EX and even the 480EX. It's the body which matters.

"To summarize, there are two important points to keep in mind. First, E-TTL II does not require any changes to either the flash units or lenses used with an E-TTL II camera - the changes are all basically internal to the camera body. And second, while E-TTL II does use distance data when it’s available and when it’s appropriate (eg: when using direct non-bounce flash), it doesn’t prevent you from using older lenses..... Camera units which support E-TTL II: EOS 1D mark II, EOS 30V/33V/7S/Elan 7N/Elan 7EN. Flash units which support E-TTL II: All EX series Speedlites: 220EX, 380EX, 420EX, 550EX, MR-14EX, MT-24EX."- Flash Photography with Canon EOS Cameras For more info: http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-f...ex.html#ettlii |

Ok, juz a cheky comment... Read the specs and you'll see the differences between the 2. I think the main fuss for most people is the difference in price. Features wise, the 580EX is an improvement over the 550EX. Question is, do you need the extra features and is it worth it to you? |

It's about $680 SGD. Frankly, if u don't use the extra features, no biggy.
It's available in HK and B&H. Not in Singapore yet, so unless you want a set w/o warranty ![]() |
