Default Question on Sigma 70-300mm APO micro lens

Just bought one after got the feedback from the forum. AF time is long. Pic is OK. Like to ask questions on micro function.

Manual said:
(1) Set Zoom Ring to max telophoto setting. (is that 300mm?)

(2) Turn switch to 'Macro'.
While Macro Switch is set to 'Macro', Zoom Ring is locked to max telephoto setting, zooming is not possible.
So that means: no Zooming for Macro mode ??

The Zoom ring can still be turned, do not know what will be the consequence.

(3) Back to normal, turn Macro Switch to 'Normal' while Focus Ring is out of the macro ring.
That means, I have to switch to Manual Focus 'MF', and turn the Focus Ring out of macro range ?

What is the function of Macro when the lens has 300mm Zooming ? Or in other words, Can I use normal zooming to replace the troublesome macro mode such that I will never switch to Macro Mode ??

ThnX!

for (1), yes, 300mm is the max. for (2), there is zooming in macro mode, but limited between 200-300mm only, u try n u can feel that it's blocked at 200mm. for (3), yar, change to MF, turn focus ring out of macro range, then turn macro switch back to normal to back to normal mode.

u can always use normal mode all the time, macro mode is just for u to take a pic up to 1:2 ratio at 300mm "macro" mode.

Switching to macro mode allows you to get closer to the subject, ie your minimum focusing distance is reduced and with that the magnification of the subject is increased. At 300mm, min distance in macro mode, you are supposed to get 1:2 magnification. If you look at the magnification markings on the lens barrel, you will see what magnification you can get if you do not switch to macro mode, at min distance at 300mm.

For large insects, you may well be able to get nice closeup shots without switching to macro mode.

I find that the lens is pretty sharp for macro provided you use tripod. Enjoy!
