strangely enough, i have a friend in particular whose eyes always seem closed when taken with flash. in the end i got her to open her eyes really wide and it turned out looking pretty natural. strange...

maybe it is due to Front-Curtain Sync (normal sync). The shutter is open after the flash and your gf's eye closes after the flash... so....

try to use other flash setting and see, like Rear-Curtain Sync (shutter open b4 the flash)....

I never own D70, this is just my thought.. do correct me if i am wrong

D70 cannot continuous shoot with flash. the flash recycle time not that fast.

it's not D70 that can't do that, it's the flash used, correct me if i'm wrong?

using an SB800 with the extra battery will shorten the cycle time. and you may also need to ensure you're not firing at full power.

How about try bouncing the flash towards the ceiling? That will cut down the glare to the subject substantially. Gives a more natural feel too.

Another way is to wrap a piece of paper to cover the flash. It'll cut down flash "power" (but if short enough distance should be ok), but will diffuse it such that it is not too glaring.

I don't bother counting sometimes, just say "smile", then click. Seems to work better than counting.

oh, haha. tot your girl = your girlfriend.

how old is she? try asking your girl to look at the lens instead. she may know that the light is gonna flash, and instinctively look towards the flash each time...

If she's old enough to understand "don't blink", then just try that. It may work.

Or you can try shooting without flash - bump up the ISO and consider getting a cheap fast prime lens. (50/1.8?) Or just shoot outdoors more often, when there's enough light.
