IMHO the following are some factors.
1) Have existing setup with some good lens invested 2) Noise level on E-1 above iso 800 is not on par with competitors 3) Expensive! Personally, I did consider the E-1 but price and high iso performance held me back. |

like he said....until there are more affordable lenses, difficult to get newcomers to DSLRs who don't already own a setup. That said, I think for what they are, Oly 4/3 lenses are cheap for the quality u get, problem is, its that or nothing at the moment.

sitting on the fence.
three main drawbacks, to me at least - noise (maybe non-existent in the near future with the upcoming models), lens choices (wide-angle zooms are few, but the 12-60 looks promising), and small viewfinder. |

Now why would anyone want poor quality lenses?

Because of misinformation? Because everyone else uses a C or an N? ![]()

Hi,
I am a 4/3 user myself. Admittedly the noise levels above iso800 are terrible and the pics are unusable. some say it replicates the good ole film days! I personally do not have an issue with it, I am a newbie to digital cameras and am still resistant to shooting above iso400/800. I solved the problem with two fast primes, the sigma 30mm 1.4 and the oly 50mm 2.0. ;o) The E-1 does have in-cam noise filter and noise reduction which you must use for long exposures (otherwise the pics turn out horrendous). drawback is the write speed is very slow and you certainly cant be using it for everyday shoots because the buffer cant catch up. I am waiting for my Extreme III CF to arrive and hopefully that should dramatically improve the card write speed. I started with an E-330 then bought a second hand E-1 and then couple more lenses. Anyone interested can view my flickr for test shots on 4/3 system. www.flickr.com/photos/vurtopia cheers |

Nothing wrong with ISO 800 (unless you pixel peep), perfectly usable even up to A3-size prints; been there done that.

E1 was attractive during its time, the only DSLR that feature 12 RAW frames buffer. that was yesterday's news, everyone else has caught up since then. the E1 is like a Fuji S2pro, people dun buy it for its speed. the only thing i like about the E1 is the image quality. i think the 'P1' will have a very tough act to follow... ![]() |

Well, I guess people have still not found any real drawbacks of Oly worth talking about other than the noise. And they seem to continue discussing this boring issue which is mostly a problem for those who do not have Oly and those newcomers who don't know how to use the camera. I guess if you dig you can always find something on every brand although it is difficult when the life cycle of a camera is just a few months like some C & N.
It is so boring to discuss the same thing over and over.... BTW, 4/3 is not equal Oly anymore... which was the case 30 months ago. |

Isn't asking people if they are going to buy a fourthirds camera in a forum for fourthirds users silly?
It's like walking up to someone eating an apple and ask them if they eat apples. I could understand if you were asking people if they were going to buy one of the NEW fourthirds cameras coming out this summer. Needless to say I answered, "Already have a system" since I already own an E-300 and don't plan to buy a new fourthirds camera for several years. Additional: When I posted the above comment I didn't know this was such an old, dead thread that someone resurrected...hence my terse comments. Well, I used my last (fully manual) SLR for 20 years (before getting a C-700), and never needed a repair. Unfortunately due to cheaper manufacturing I don't expect the E-300 to last that long.

In a way, with digital, the camera body is now seen as "disposable". Think about it... as sensor sizes grows... the older cameras basically get outdated, and therefore the manufacturers look at it as a reason not to build the camera bodies as tough as they used to, not to mention the amount of electronics within a digital camera. I fret the death of my E-1, but after so many years on the road, death will come faster than my last film camera, the Nikon F4s. I am sure the E-1, though well built (one of the best out there in the digital world) might not last as long as the Nikon. Well... the F-2AS I had lasted more than 30 years and is still working today... but is mainly because it is fully manual. Less electronics to wear down and fail...
