Anyone used these 2 lens before?
What are the general comments about them and which one do you prefer? According to http://www.photodo.com, the Sigma AF 24/2,8 is actually grade 4.0 compared to Nikkor AF 24/2,8D at grade 3.5. Or do you have any wide angle prime lens you would recommend?

I have a AF-D 24/2.8 Nikkor which I love to bits. Absolutely one of my favourite lens. It can focus quite closely, which helps in wideangle composition when you go close to a foreground object to anchor the photo. It's supposed to have CRC (close range correction), which do something or other when you are focussing close.
The lens itself is sharp, and the colours produced are very nice and contrasty (I don't really use a polariser with this lens, as the colours are saturated enough without me doing anything) Built is solid too. I have no experience with the sigma though. I'm happy enough with my Nikkor, and since I don't foresee myself taking pictures of testcharts on brick walls in the near future, will not be switching. ![]() |

Sathea,
Think the Nikon 24mm is one of a the finest wide prime lens. It's a fantastic lens to use as it's quite sharp when you closed down to f5.6-f8. The colours are vibrant and the contrast are quite well balance when use on both film and digital cams. Have not regretted eversince I got that lens. But is the Sigma 24mm f2.8 still available in the market? I thought Sigma is marketing the 24mm f1.8 which is of course more ex but the build and quality is just as good as the Nikon 24mm f2.8. Anyone else has Sigma lens? The f1.8 version? |

Depending on what you wanted to shoot. Have you considered 20mm?
Seem like quite a few of this gem pop up. Saw 3 at TCW. Shld be due to the release of 17/18-XX zoom for dslr. Had used the 24mm briefly. A good walk about lens due to it small size and light weight. Compare to the sigma, this will be a better buy. The different in price is too little to go for a 3rd party lens.

Used both the sigma 24/2.8 af and the nikon 24/2.8 manual focus.
The sigma surprisingly is almost as good as the mf nikon - do not have an af 24 nikon to cross compare. Image quality is very close, the nikon seems to be just a little bit better. Sigma colors seem a touch harder and more saturated. I think there should be a price difference of at least 100 to 180 between these 2 lens in the AF version used. For a tight budget would suggest you get the sigma. But between the sigma 24 and the nikon 28 both af I take the 28 nikon. |
