Default Nikon D70

Hi guys... I just got a NIkon D70 few days ago. I am facing some problem with the camera exposure. Whenever i use the reading from the camera, the photos will turn out 1stop under. Anyone facing the same problem? I went back to the shop n they change a brand new set but its still the same. So whenever i take picures now, i need to compensate +1 to get the correct exposure. Anyone can advise?

This 'issue' comes up so often it should be a sticky in the Nikon thread together with other common FAQs.

Hi... actually the cam is not problematic... Maybe they have their reason of adjusting 1 stop under. When i compensate by 1 stop, the picture turn out very nice.... so dun worry too much. Have to understand the camera well. At least now i am more relieve that my camera got no problem.

I'm a user of a D70 too. From what I've read around here, Nikon DSLRs do underexpose shots a bit. This is done within the firmware and done to preserve the highlights of the pictures taken. To avoid this problem, just set your exposure compensation to between +0.3 to +0.7. The pictures should turn out as good as you would expect... Properly exposed...

i'm too a D70 user, the underexposure issue, its fate. u have to acept it, to overcome it juz increase your exposure compensation to +1stop loh... Nikon picture tends to be softer comparing to Canon. i felt a kind discomfort when i first switched from Canon A80 to Nikon D70, however the crispy clear picture made from D70 really impressed me very much

Easiest solution without having to +EV is to use a custom curve. Please do a search either here or at DPReview.

Hi.. I went down to Nikon to check yesterday. Its normal. To solve the problem, get a faster lens. I tried using their f1.4 len, all the exposure very accurate.

It is mentioned here that using custom tonal curve is better than compensating. You try to download the custom curve and see the result. Do share to the rest how it has helped you.

Default know your camera first

..i think that i have read enough of the previous thread that mentioned by squid.. some of them , or i would say all of them is right.. to us or those who have already been DSLR for some time. we can figure out what went wrong or what's lacking by looking at the output.. instead of putting the equipment to blame ..

Understand YOUR EQUIPMENT first . no cam will always have to correct exposure the first time.. no even the msot expensive or the most popular one.. guys... get back to your fundermantal and remember . it the person that is behind the equipment that make the pic .. not the equipment other wise just use a P & S camera..

no one said that a DLSR is easy to use when you shoot. it just acclerate your learning curve and also without worrying that and be trigger happy..

My D70 is on +1.3 to +0.3 EV constantly. Anyway, it's very easy to adjust the compensation. I always use Aperature priority mode, and all you need to do is turn the shutter speed dial. For more important shots, I would usually practice bracketing

Chisiang, what is the rational for adjusting the EV? Sorry, for asking this as I'm a newbie and as much as I tried reading, some of the stuff just cannot understand...my england not so powderful wan....
Does it meaning that the defaukt setting of '0' is not sufficient?
