Hi Caussway

Cute little fella, nice capture! Btw, is the renovation at MOG completed? Plan to pay a visit soon.

Cheers

Hi Caussway,

Good shots there. The flash in the first pic is just a little too strong. Like the pose of the sunbird in the 2nd pic, good composition and timing there too.

Not sure, it's been 2 months since my visit.

Agree, it's a manual flash difficult to check the exposure with viewfinder . Have omnibounce but seldom use as I lose the flash power.

actually what Garion is saying is that you shouldn't use flash as main light. The exposure is correct.

Oh understand now
I didn't prepare to use tripod as I just arrived at the spot. When I saw this little beauty quickly took a few shot.

Acutually even the second pic I suspect the flash is also use as the main to light up the subject. IMHO, there is actually no right or wrong in using the flash as the main.

I say that flash was also the main in the second pic cos judging from the background which is a tad dark or under. I find that it was the flash was the main light that lighted up the subject.

What can be done is to meter the ambient light or the background. Set the exposure for the background lighting and then use the flash to fill in the shadows and bring out the details

Allow me to show some example:

Pic 1. was taken before I could set up my camera properly, I just fire a few insurance shots. You find that the flash was actually stronger than the ambient light (though not as overly obvious) it light up the subject and the leaves and branch on the right, while the background is dark

Pic 2. was after I have meter the background and ambient then I use the flash iTTL -2EV to fill the subject, see the difference?
