Default Which lens is better for my D70?

Hi everyone, I am getting a lens but don't know which is better.

    Sigma 18-200mm, or
    Nikon 35-70mm?

I will be using more for general photography, landscape, some close-up but not macro. Portrait and maybe candid shots?

P.S. Thanks for response and viewing and sorry if I asked a stupid question.

Both lens also can do what you had stated although the 35-70mm lens might be a bit tight for landscape (but you can still do stitching).

18-200mm Sigma is pretty impressive and had coverage of almost all of the range. However I am not sure with this lens, does it had optical stabilizer (OS - which is equivalent to Nikon's VR)? This is pretty useful in the long end of the lens (at 100-200mm).
I am not a photographer, just someone who happened to have a couple of cameras.

If no OS, then you must be sure that you have a steady hands so as to have sharp shots in the longer end of the lens. Or you can get other items to help you on that - things such as Steadepod (sgcamerastore - S$45), monopod (any brand, test them out in stores), tripod (any brand, test them out in stores).

Be sure to read our stickies on what to look out for when buying second hand lenses. And if really don't know or not confident, please ask a friend who is good with buying and checking lenses to follow you.

My personal opinion would be to take the 18-200mm lens if you really want to 'upgrade' from whatever lens you have now.

The lens I am using now is 18-70mm for D70. The lens is a bit lag. When I start my camera, And for the first few shots, the picture will be blackened, and after taking a few shots, it will then be okay. So the 18-200mm is a better choice? Thanks!

Actually it is not suppose to do that. What mode are you using - manual or auto? Is your metering correct. I think you might want to send your D70 for a check up.

Sounds like you may have sticky aperture blades that need a few shots to get "un-stuck".

I think the problem lies with my lens and not the body of the camera. You have any lens that I can use for my D70? So I can try it out and make sure that the problem really lies with my lens.

Sent it in for repair. P&G Camera and Camera Hospital did repair old lenses. Maybe you should sent your lens down for a check.

I think it would be better that you get familiarise with your camera and lenses first before thinking of buying new lens. Sent your old lens for service first.

But if die die want to buy, then you can visit our BnS section. Be sure to be extra careful when buying second hand lenses.

don't worry bro. just ask them for a quote. i've sent to camera hospital before to service an old manual lens. cost me $80 to remove sand and some dirt. but better still you go down yourself, coz steven (of camera hospital)will do a pre check and quote you before he commence any work. you don't agree, you can walk out anytime. he's a nice chap.

disclaimer; i'm in no way related to camera hospital

You should bring the whole thing down. Your camera and the lens. Let them check and tell you what's wrong and the quote for repair or servicing if any.

You can compare prices if you're willing to walk around.

And it's back to the same thing again, dont rush into buying new lens first. Figure what's wrong. And maybe get a better understanding of your d70 & go out to shoot and shoot then you'll probably know what kinda lens you need

    Cheers!
