Dear Nikonians,
in your opinion, which of the lens worth the money (i'm very poor one): 1) AF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED 2) AF 70-300mm f/4-5-5.6G and which type of Nikkor lens (type-G or type-D) s more suitable for dlsr newbie? third question, will third party lens like tamron or sigma affect the D70's autofocus and metering system? ![]() |

Get the AF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED if these two lenses are the only choices you are considering.
If can find a AF-D 70-210 4-5.6 ED in the used market its even better both and cheaper. It's hard to find but it's worth your every penny if you're able to score a relatively underused one. I got one new then sold my 28-200 G. I guarantee you'll love the lense. It's very sharp and very fast to focus. I have used the 70-300 and it is very slow in AF-ing. cheers, bcoolboy |

As for the 2 lens, it is hard to compare as the AF28-200 IF-ED cost $500+ and the AF70-300G cost only $200+. A much better comparison would be: 1) AF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED 2) AF 70-300mm f/4-5-5.6D ED Whereas both is around $500+. In this regards, I would get the AF70-300 f/4.5-5.6D ED anytime. This lens is known for it sharpness at its class of 70-200 teles. BTW, your earlier AF 70-300mm f/2.5-5.6G is a kit lens and some of the previous Nikon bodies like F65, F55 package with it when they sell. This lens if not wrong can get easily ~$250 (brand new with warranty) or >$180 (2nd hand) I ever owned the AF28-200 f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED, bought it when it is launched and put up to sell 2 weeks later after trying it, due to soft images. This is inevitable as the range is too long, from 28-200. Hope this helps. ![]() |

Agree with Sykes, but beware that the 70-300mm ED can be soft wide open as well ... you just have to make sure that you use it at the most optimal settings. It's not 100% sharp all the way through, because if it was, it would probably not sell for $500+
I haven't tried the G version, but based on what I've read, you'd do well to skip it.Question is, what's more important to you, the short end or long end ? I would propose another one ... the 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 ... this is a good lens, a keeper on your camera body that will give you a pretty decent range. Another one, if you don't mind the shorter range, is the 24-85 AF-S. These are all around the $500-600 range new, and perhaps 65-75% of that used. And they are original Nikkors, so should retain value better than 3rd party lenses ... not that I have anything against 3rd party, I have some of them myself, only when I can't get the range affordably in a Nikkor. |

If it is between those two lense, then I would recommend going for the 28-200mm. Very versatile and compact. Not bad as an all-in-one.
