Thread: How long does it take Canon to make its mirrorless SLR?

  1. #1

Question How long does it take Canon to make its mirrorless SLR?

Few weeks back saw the news concerning Canon's plan. Judging from the way Canon releases products in the past,
when can we roughly expect the camera to come out? Possible within the year?

I have two Canon DSLRs to get rid of, likely to trade in and get a small camera with interchangeable Lens.

Existing S9#/G12 are not in my list.

I predict.... 6 months!! Of course that's just a wild guess. None of us here work for Canon in their R&D division, and if we did, we could not divulge anything.

Also, if Canon releases a mirrorless camera (you can't really use "SLR" in this context) it may require whole new lenses, etc, unless they maintain the flange distance, which would make it huge.

You can follow the usual rumors on the Canon forums in DPReview, or here:

I predict it will NEVER happen...

You know why? Coz if it's mirrorless, it wouldn't be an SLR

    Guys,

    Off thread a bit.

Yesterday i read from National Geo that in 2013 - 2014.
Our Sun will release a giant Solar Flare ...

Which will wipe out all electronics equipments, satelites and transformers.

Without much considerations and only technical, (ie. sort of a XXXD but mirrorless), I think pretty fast (they probably already have prototypes in the closet).
With its leverage of PnS, Sensor and DSLR knowhow, Canon can certainly enter the market very fast.

The question is more of eventual direction.
Do they want just a mirrorless XXXD series using existing DSLR lenses, or something more.
The Canon and Nikon lenses are typically not small, esp the VR, USM types.
The form factor will become rather odd (small body; large lenses).
A mirrorless system the size of existing DSLR bodies defeats the purpose of a mirrorless system or at least takes away one point that make a MLIC camera different from a DSLR system.
Then of course there is flange distance considerations. Canon is not too bad here, as its current DSLR flange distance is not too long and already it can take many other brand lenses w/ an adapter. Then again, that is a 'bad' thing for the comapany, as they may end up cannibalizing their own lens sales.
If its going to be new mount and new lens, then its a slower path to market.

In the end, its anyone's guess.
I guess we just have to wait and see.

No worries. Flares affect most on satellite as it's on space. Earth have protective magnetic field to protect against harmful radiations from space. But, a really strong one could wipe out the magnetic field and cause longer time to recover. Anyway, the huge solar flares isn't directed at earth. No worries.

the Canon mirrorless system is just a rumor. even if they are preparing for such a system, they'll only jump in if they think it makes economic sense to do so. i don't think they'll want to cannibalize their existing markets.
