If you are looking for a budget tele-zoom, I would recommend the Tamron 28-200 XR which is light and value-for-money lens. I personally owned one before and had no problem printing a A4 size print.

I own the Tamron 28-200 XR in Pentax mount. If you want to make A4 prints from film, I would recommend using f8 or smaller at 28mm and f11 or smaller at 200mm. AF is quite noisy. Pincushion distortion gets noticeable from 135mm-200mm. CA is noticeable at 200% or higher manification on computer screen at 200mm f5.6 at the edges, though not noticeable in prints. If you are using on DSLR, the image quality should be better since you are not using the edges. I would still recommend the lens, though you have to decide if it meets your needs.

try the sigma 55-200 for something portable and reasonably value for $$$ or Sigma/Tamron 70-300 for greater flexibility and range. if u dun mind up to film equivalent of 200mm and want a one lense do all, try the sigma 18-125mm. |

Tamron 28-300 Di should be out very soon here in sg. Sigma 18-125 is a pretty good lens. Currently testing out. So far good sharpness and contrast encountered.

Anyone know where to buy Tamron lens at better prices? Any idea how much it'll cost for a Tamron 28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR LD lens?
Thanks. |

Hi fengwei,
I have taken notice while searching for information and found that this thread has been laid silent since 09/2004. Do you happen to have purchased and used the said lens (28-300 Tamron Di)? I am interest to hear any comment if any, before buying, to be used as a walk about lens on a D700. I am aware that the Nikon expert uses it too. Infact, I nearly bought it until I received a SMS, this morning, reminding me about a IT Show next week at Suntec. Perhaps since 2004 till now many changes or upgrade specs.? |

Any other members have used the lens?
Comments welcome. I am aware of a lens review posted by courtesy of nightwolf75. I like the walk about features of the lens 18-200 used on my D300 and looking forward to add this onto the D700 too. ![]() I really look forward to some comments. Thank you in anticipation. |

Used to own the non-Di version and pretty impressed with the results even at 300mm end. U should try out the VC version instead, i'm blown away by its performance. and able to get sharp pics at 300mm end on my 5D at ISO 800, f/6.3, 1/10 in low lighting conditions.

I have the non-DI and non-XR version (product code: 185D)
http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/detail.asp?IDLens=383 It's a very old lens, but I bought it "new" from a shop clearing old stocks recently. It's quite sharp at all focal length and aperture, except CA at tele-end. Quite a affordable & all-rounder walkaround lens to own and can still use it when upgrade to FF. ![]()
