In both case, D70 should be better.

a) D70 + bad lens < coolpix
D70 + good lens > coolpix
pic quality is not decided by the number of mega

b) D70 shorter

D70 has better pic quality. Esp the high ISO like 800, 1000 and 1600. Don't think the 8MP coolpix has that high ISO to compare.

D70's response is like F18 vs 8700 Skyhawk. Just a simple analogy.
D70 sound like this "Beep! tskdak! beep! tskdak! tskdak! tskdak!
8700 sound like this "dit dit dit dit beep!........tskdat!

Nevertheless, 8700 is a big improvement over 5700. So should the upcoming 8800.

In general, cameras equipment with smaller sensors will give rise to more noise in the pictures. This is apparent with higher ISO. The lens you use on the D70 will also affect the picture quality.

I don't have the number in mind, but I'm quite sure the D70 has a shorter time lag. You may want to check dpreview.com for the figures.

a) D70 is better unless paired with a bad lens.

b) D70 is way better.

Default Ken Rockwell

Maybe, you should read Ken Rockwell's article on the different types of digital cameras. He has got some very strong words there. Shouldn't miss it.

I love the way he writes his articles. Wonderful.

Here's one on the Megapixel Myth, which sorta explains why loads of megapixel on a camera does not mean great picture quality. Case in point the Nikon 4MP D2H. Its only 4. 1 effective megapixels but can blow most if not all 5-8Mp consumer fixed lense cameras in terms of picture quality : -

Anyway, to add to the previous posts; because Coolpix cameras are fitted with fixed lenses, you are stuck with that particular lens. Although they are not in anyway bad lenses, they are also not the best. With the D70, you have the freedom to choose the kind of lens that could give you the best results (for a price of course).

Cheers,
