In general, almost none. All cameras will try to give you a correct and balanced exposure.

Different naming convention... auto in Nikon is programmed mode or P mode, some call Professional mode.

They are try to give the right exposure, so almost similar.

Auto mode in Nikon is still called Auto, Program mode is a whole separate mode

Erm, no. In Nikon, Auto is called "Auto". Of course, if you're using a D3s or something, you may not have an Auto mode.

    hmm difference..

difference in metering module / exposure calculations
    difference in white balance calculations
difference in processor algorithm (colors, sharpness adjustments etc)
    difference in sensor

all theses will affect the photos of different brands

Auto is like a AI, the cpu in camera determine how the photo should be taken. every cpu used different algorithm to code how the cpu would evalution the scene and decide the best settings. so the different programmers of different companies do things differently. so given the same scene some brand may underexpose, others overexpose by a little.

only entry levels has AUTO and scene modes, semi-pro and pro only has ASPM.
