Question What is SSM?

What does SSM mean?

1. Super Sado Masochistic
2. Super Silent Mechanism
3. ShiSaMo
4. Sexy Super Model
5. Soft Silent Man

And I can't find any reference to SSM on Minolta website

Someone on the MML said SSM stands for "Same Slow Motor". Well, that remains to be seen.

Anyway, the poll options are pretty limited. Where is plain old "no"?

Isn't SSM the same as Canon's USM and Sigma's HSM? I think it is a good think cos until now, Minolta's body are rather well-known to have slower focus times compared to cameras with lens motors. Andm aybe with the introduction of SSMs into Minolta lens, then image stabilization can be a real option in the near future.

correction : usm, hsm or ssm does not help in forcusing, it only help in tracking-meaning u when u to forcus on an moving object(car or bird), usm, hsm, ssm will be faster.

What I meant was that the motor helps the camera lens to attain focus faster. That is the camera motor will tend to be slower when driving the same heavy lens to the focus lock point as compared to when u have SSM, HSM or USM. I think it is the speed with which the camera lens shifts into focus after the camera's meter has locked its focus.

I understand that the SSM, etc does not help with the focussing, as that is dependent of the camera's meter and other external factors, just that it drives the lens to its focus point as determined by the camera's meter faster. So in a sense, focussing is faster since u wait less for the camera to be ready to shoot, especially when u have focus priority instead of shutter priorty. For this reason, I have chosen shutter priority as my 505si takes a long time to get a heavy lens to its focus point, and sometimes u can't just wait for the focus to be pin sharp as in action shots and so u just shoot first to capture the action but sacrifice some sharpness.

It debuts 15 years after Canon and nearly 8 years after Nikon. Gee how innovative of Minolta...
