    Basalt.

And yes, I heard about the price hike a few months back. But back then what I heard was a 15% price hike across the board. Turned out to be 20%!!

Hello SunChasers, I am new to Digital Photography and I find myself mostly taking Portriats and Landscape. In particular, Sunrise & Sunset. I am planning a Sunrise shoot this Sunday (03/07/2011) @ Sentosa Cove. However, as you know, this is a very upmarket residential area so we have to be more discreet & careful. Cannot take photos of the residential properties. I've recce the place and took some shots last week and I must say it's a very "feel good" location.
Those whom are keen have to take my car in and we can meet somewhere outside like the Seah Imm car park. Got to be early, meeting time about 6am so we can have enough time to do set-up. Space is limited to 3 only. We depart for Sentosa at 6:10 sharp.
If it rains on the morning of 3rd July than the outing is auto cancel. PM me if you're keen and we will exchange contacts.
I hope I can learn more from you guys.

From his post, seems like basalt wasn't the environmentally-friendly wonder that it was made out to be.
But since I know little about this subject, best I reserve judgement

Well, Basalt went down because it does not save that much weight compared to CF. People who are willing to pay for less weight will be willing to pay more to get the CF ones.

Compared to CF, it is heavier, but quite close to CF in other aspects. And it is definitely much better than aluminum but only slightly lighter. And the Gitzo basalt tripods do not smell as bad as the CF, and most importantly, they are much cheaper.

Clement and myself went basalt, simply because it was a discontinued model, and the price we got the tripods were downright steal. And no, they are all out of stock now. Gitzo still offers some basalt models but no longer for the explorer.
