Thread: Anybody saw this afternoon's sun?

Default Anybody saw this afternoon's sun?

There was a full rainbow surrounding the sun this afternoon, around lunchtime. Any idea what caused this effect? Don't think there were clouds. Sorry, added the lamppost for interest...

The halo usually mean there's some bad weather coming....

Is it causes by haze? The small dust particles in the air diffract the light source from sun just like the water droplet diffract the sunlight in the rainbow?

Nope, as described in the link, it's caused by ice crystals high up in the atmosphere - in the picture you can see a very thin cloud like layer. The same phenomenon also happens with the moon as well.

For moon, would it be known as a moon corona?

I noticed the halo today too. It was especially obvious around mid afternoon.

The equipment can only bring you so far - the rest of the photographic journey is done by you.
