Default quick peek at CF reader for iPad/iPad2

i came across a post by Terry White on a CF card reader for iPad/iPad2 a few weeks ago.

for ipad users, you would have known that Apple's Camera Connector only has SD card reader. and with the recent OS update, a number of the china/HK OEM card readers are useless cos (apple being apple) of the decrease in voltage going thru the ipad connector. for those people who are using CF cards, basically we are screwed cos there's no reliable CF card reader out there. thus, when i read Terry White's post, i immediately placed my order. after much delays due to shortage of parts, it finally arrived today.

this is how it looks like

i've decided to test uploading 10 JPGs, for a combine file size of 24MB, and see how fast it can import into my ipad (which is updated with the latest OS). took a video of it. all in all, it took roughly 40secs. not too shabby. btw, Terry White mentioned that the ipad can read NEF (RAW from nikon). but, for my ipad, it can't read the RAW from my mamiya. i dun have any NEFs at hand. so apologies...

(video takes a while to load)

    and the end result...

overall, i am pretty damn impress by this little gadget. IMO, i think for those of us who uses CF cards and have an ipad, this will be a definite help in reviewing your image at the field. the only thing is that, since it is china-made, you have to be gentle with it or else it is pretty easy to bend the CF card pins.... and yah... at USD30 a pop, it is pricey. however, as there are not many options out there for CF cards, plus i hate to bring my laptop out, this is quite a good buy.

    Thanks for sharing!
But come to think of it, 24Mb will take roughly 40 secs. Still no where near as fast as the normal card readers.
But I can understand. For iPad, really no other choice due to the restriction by Apple.

This is one of the best 3rd party accessories for photographers, especially those who are using CF cards. The previous method was to use a card reader with the original CCK but because of the latest restriction built in by Apple, not all readers can work. I have tried transferring about 80+ pics of NEF and jpegs with it, took about 2mins or so.

i'm sure. problem is whether it will be able to draw enuf power fm the ipad connector to read the card, izn't it? as far as i know, this is the only CF reader that i know of that can draw enough power to read the card.

i thought that apple has this?

Well I guess the downside is that you still gotta bring your camera cable along, but nonetheless, i think its not bad though.

At least when you really need to transfer the pictures, you still can.

okay... brought it out today for a shoot. one niggly problem encountered (also mentioned by rob galbraith) - the card reader doesn't play nice with sandisk extreme III 32GB card. i had intermittent read error problem, which resulted in me removing the card reader and re-insert again a couple of times. so, those who are thinking of buying and are using the same card like me, just be a little patient.

other than dat, it works and makes reviewing photos in the studio a breeze. now... if there's a way to colour-correct my ipad display...

I just got a CF/MS/Micro/SD card reader for my ipad2. Similar to the one TS using. And it work on both ipad1 and ipad2. The brand is Capdase.

I would say its a niffty pieces of gear and for the price, its still aright.
