I own a FS4000 US but I'd urge you to take a look @ Nikon's Coolscan V ED ... it's newer, uses a faster transfer (USB 2.0 vs Canon's USB 1.1/SCSI-2) and I suppose it'll scan faster. However all these will command a premium over the Canonscan.

Your question is how often or how many negatives/positives are you going to scan ... quite a number of people have migrated to digital (myself included) so do consider carefully!

Just my 2 stops.

i wonder whether USB2.0 is faster or SCSI-2? if let's say budget constrain, will Canon FS4000 be a better choice?

Coolscan V's a newer scanner thus I'd suspect it'll scan negatives/positives faster ... as for the transfer speed, I won't be able to shed any light given I'm quite clueless of these technology ...

In terms of value for money, the Canon FS4000US will certainly be the best value for money. You're getting very good Canon optics and 4000dpi resolution at sub-$900 pricing. But the drawback is the USB 1.1 interface, so unless you're using SCSI you could take a while to scan at the highest resolution.

The Coolscans are well... cool! The results are very good, but you're paying a premium for the scanner. So unless you scan a lot, you'd be better off buying the FS4000US and living with the slower scanning speeds. Both come with dust and scratches removal technology, which is probably the most useful technology in scanner so far! You can also look at other affordable alternatives such as Minolta scanners.
