    Photorec.
    Comes with free download of testdisk software.
    Pretty neat stuff.
    Command line based though.

    Really depends on what you mean by overwritten. Deleted files are not really wiped. Just that pointers to the specific sectors where the files rest are removed. So if new data written did not overwrite those sectors, still recoverable. If those specific sectors were overwritten, those deleted files are gone forever. If only partially overwritten, there is a slight chance you can recover part of it.

    i've recovered files from deleted and formatted partitions.
    It's not possible to recover if the files are overwritten with new data though, as dd123 said.
