Default How do photographers know the name of species?

I've been wondering for some time.
How is it that, let's say a bird photographer, knows the name of every single bird he shot? Or a macro photographer knowing the name of the insects? Flower species?
    Any websites or reference books?

If you ask really nicely, sometimes the insects will tell you their names

Nah, what Crystal said is the correct way to go about doing it.

That's quite easy actually, just shoot portraitures and nothing else. You'll always be sure the species is "human".

There are atlas on birds and insects. But it can be quite painful to search for one that matched the exact species. Some online website might offer search by features, but their database may not be as comprehensives.

They are bird lovers first. They taken photo to document the birds.

It is the same to those explorers who draw fruits and leaves in 19th century. They are botanist. No camera then, so their love of plants make them learn to draw well, because they want to document the plants.

If you are really interested in the subjects and are willing to take the time to research, you'll get your names out in time. Else there are various sites out there in the world which may be of help. I bought books on birds, fishes, plants, etc to help me ID the correct species and also understand their behaviours as well as characteristics. Spent quite a bit too on them.. hehe.

I had trouble with dragonflies/damselflies and moths but luckily there were always help online from some experts. Googling for some basic idea can also help you move along or to find a reference site. I have found online references for local spiders, local dragonflies / damselflies and also local butterflies. These have helped tremendously for my ID use.
