I assume you are referring to film SLR? With $1000, you can get a Nikon F80 with lens, or a Canon EOS30 with lens. What type of lens depends on how much you're willing to spend. Not sure what accessories you want, but you will need minimum a dry box to keep your camera if you do not already have one. UV filter to protect the lens, and lens cleaning kit (micro fiber cloth, rubber blower) are also good to have.
(Opp sorry, I just noticed you're posting in the Minolta forum) |

if you're talking about getting a new camera, then I believe the only Minolta bodies you can get would be the 800si and below. The best-of-breed Dynax 7 costs about 1.3k, so...
Fortunately there are quite a number of used Minolta bodies around (check Camera Workshop) and lenses, although the choice of used lenses are quite limited. Anyway, here's my choice (all items new): 1. Dynax 5 + 2 kit lens + Tokina AF 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5 (~$1k) 2. Tokina AT-X 20-35mm f/2.8 AF PRO ($1010) 3. Manfrotto 190Pro + 141RC ($160), S&F Reporter 100 bag ($90), filters ($150), flash, and lots of film |

Here's a CP quote for a few lenses:
1. Tokina AT-X 17mm f/3.5 AF PRO @S$678 2. Tokina AF 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5 @S$490 3. Tokina AT-X 20-35mm f/2.8 AF PRO @S$1010 4. Tokina AT-X 24-200mm AF f/3.5-5.6 @S$630 5. Tamron SP AF20-40mm F/2.7-3.5 @S$980 6. Tamron SP AF14mm F/2.8 @S$1830 |

The 19-35 is much cheaper than the Sigma 17-35 though. Can consider this one. |

The problem with SLR is, the body already takes up S$500 to S$900. Not much left for any lens or accessories. Now, let me save up another S$1k first.. ![]() And oh, I can't remember why I posted in the Minolta forum. Probably I was looking for Minolta specific solutions? But I am considering other systems as well.

So u can see that the Tokina is much cheaper but of course 2mm less and in a super wide, that's a lot I guess. The aperture range is somewhat better is the Sigma - not sure if it actually makes much difference. From what I understand, that's about 1/2 stop better. |

So far, I've shortlisted, 1. Secondhand 600si + one lens 2. Secondhand Canon EOS 100 + one lens 3. Secondhand Nikon F80 + one lens 4. Secondhand Nikon FE2/FM2 + one lens
