Flash problem with D30 / D60

.... I have a problem with a Vivitar 728AF flash unit when used on either a Canon D30 or Canon D60.... the amount of flash is way to low (not even as strong as the onboard flash or the test button flash)...

When it was used on a Canon 300D it worked perfectly (I used it indoors at ( 'M'anual 1/80 sec at f8 and was just right for family/friends etc).

On the D30 or D60 it just gives a quick 'squirt' of a flash and that's that - .....not worth using...

Anyone know why cameras in the same category vary so much... ???

can I remedy this flash unit ??? What setting should I try ???
