Default 10D Users, any shutter problem?

Hi everyone, I recently sent my 10D for servicing at Canon. I kept getting ERR99 and my shutter sounded like 'half-shot'. Was told my shutter needs replacement. My 10D is just over a year old and this is the second time my shutter has been replaced. First time was free but this time had to pay about $170 for part and service! Canon said I had shot about 20k frames! But I don't believe I did. My image number is about 6000 and I don't think I could have missed the other 14k shots. They also told me that the shutter's MTBF is 40k. So 20k is only half and so fast got to replace? If I have to replace 1 more time, I'm going to make big noise. I read that it could be because of non-Canon lenses. But I use Canon lens also same problem. Anyone face this problem before?

Filter,

Err99 might be caused by using third party battery other than eastgear and canon, try changing to eastgear or canon orginal one will be ok.

Clean the contact pins of the lense and try again.

I'm using both Eastgear and Canon batteries and not any others. But will 3rd party batteries cause damage to the shutter?

shutters are meant to die eventually.

my 10d shutter was replaced upon my specific instructions, as a preventive measure in case it dies on me at the most inopportune situation. last count for shutter: about 65K. still functioning pretty ok, i must say.

if your shutter was replaced within warranty, it would be free, though i would not know if that would apply for the second time or not.

the 40k number canon provided, is an average number where after which the shutter may or may not die off. it's just a rough guide, at best. if you're talking about your 6k shots as in you kept every single file on your computer, and yet canon sg is telling you that you fired off 20k, then something is greatly amiss, because almost all canon slr's have a counter for the shutter.

I think you should ask Canon to provide you evidence on how they come to a conclusion that your camera has fired 20K. And IMO even if it is true then the shutter life should definately be longer than that.

My 10D shutter died on me last year, after about 15k.

i think it depends on how you use the camera, ie what environment, how much abuse, how frequently you change lenses (and expose the shutter to the elements), how frequent you put it through drastic temperature changes, etc -- ie how hard you whack the camera.

Intermittent Err99s is probably a sign though; they get more frequent, then sudden every other shot is an Err99. Mine died on me during an overseas shooting trip.

BTW, Sehsuan, at what shutter count do you deliberately replace the shutter? Sounds like a good preventive measure.

I don't use my cam under extreme conditions. In fact my cam doesn't get dirty at all from my normal use. Do they reset the shutter count after replacing the shutter? And how can check the shutter count without going back to Canon?

It seems from here http://www.groovelicious.org/mt/cano...es/000126.html that there are others who face shutter problem even with Canon lenses.

for me, i thought it would be pushing my luck too far, after knowing in january this year, i've already hit 61K, and roughly estimating how much it would be by june, when i'm already shooting at the NDP rehearsals, i sure wouldn't want the shutter to die at the most inopportune moment, so i had it changed. i explicitly asked for the shutter count to find out what was the exact figure at the time of replacement.

yes, i believe the shutter comes with a count mechanism individually. but you can't count it by yourself, as far as i understand, though there is a possibility that there is a hack or something that allows it to be done. if you find any way to do so, please share it with me.

hi there,

u mean u can just ask the canon service people to change the shutter blade if it's still working fine and it's under warranty?

coz i had quite an unpleasant experience a couple of days back, i requested a functional test on my 10D cos i felt that the shutter was .. bit funny.. didnt feel that the sound was right when the shutter fired. Sounded kinda sluggish but otherwise the camera is in working condition.

Anyway, to cut the long story short, the service people told me i have to pay $120 to check my camera even though it was under warranty!

To quote them, '' warranty does NOT cover functional test''.

hmm, wonder if this is truly the case? does anyone out there face the same problem?

thanks for the advice

Indeed warranty does not cover functional test.
